Farm Bill Update: House Agriculture Committee Passes Farm Bill

On July 11, the House Agriculture Committee approved its Farm Bill draft by a vote of 35 – 11, after a day-long mark up. The bill included $16.5 billion in cuts to SNAP. What does this mean for hungry Americans?

  • 500,000 households would see their benefits cut by $90 per month;
  • 2 – 3 million individuals would lose their food assistance entirely;
  • Nearly 300,000 kids would lose free school meals.

Feeding America opposed the bill and expressed concerns about the impact these cuts would have on Americans struggling with hunger. Thanks to you, we generated more than 2,616 calls to Congress in opposition to the bill.

What’s Next?

The path forward remains unclear. The full House still needs to pass the bill, and there is no timetable for when a vote might occur. The Senate has already passed a different version of the bill, which means the House and Senate would need to negotiate the differences between the two versions. Then, it would need to pass both houses once again.

Feeding America will continue to monitor the situation and reach out to you as the process unfolds. We’ll still need your help to make sure we get a Farm Bill that’s good for hungry Americans!
